Hippos are highly aggressive and unpredictable. They can run 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, they evolved in the ocean. About 55 million years ago they diverged from the cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises etc) and came to live on land, in rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps.
