Source data for this painting is a map of the glacial flows of the Antarctic ice sheet, supplied by the Australian Antarctic Division, with lines of glacial ice flow traced from satellite maps. Dots of surrounding sea ice flows are improvised. Their forms are inspired by direct experience and observation of ice, and by imagining the ice reflecting the movement patterns of stars above.
